CSUEU and CSU Are Back at the Bargaining Table Over
Wages & Benefits

Seems like just last year we finalized our contract with the CSU – and in fact, we did. But now it’s time to “re-open” the wages and benefits section of the collective bargaining agreement and our Bargaining Team is ready!

The CSUEU and CSU Bargaining Teams met on Friday via Zoom, presenting our opening proposal. Our goal is to have a contract that implements the recommendations of the Mercer salary study, with 5% annual steps increases for employees with positive performance evaluations.

The CSU indicated their opening proposal, to be presented at the first bargaining session on Feb. 17, will include steps. The CSU is very committed to a step-based compensation structure, they said, as is the CSU Board of Trustees.

CSU Begins Process of Selecting Next Chancellor, Holds Open Forums 

There will be three open forums this week for members of the CSU community to participate in person or virtually as the Board of Trustees begins the process of hiring the next chancellor. The forums, which start today, provide an opportunity for participants to share their thoughts and expectations of the next chancellor.

Registration is not needed to attend any of the forums in person or virtually. Participants who wish to provide comments virtually must register in advance.

This will be the CSU's fifth chancellor over a period of two years, reflecting a clear crisis of leadership. The chancellor represents the entire CSU system, the largest public university in the U.S., and helps to set and execute the vision of the University. The immediate challenges facing the CSU are declining student enrollment and an inability to hire and retain qualified personnel.

We need a chancellor who will sharpen the commitment to the CSU mission of educating first-generation college students while serving as an engine of opportunity for University employees.

"We are seeing the direct results when CSU leadership does not adequately invest in staff and students: extremely high turnover among staff, leading to loss of qualified and experienced personnel," said CSUEU President Catherine Hutchinson. "The trickle-down impacts students leading to interrupted services and loss of institutional knowledge. We have to do better than stagnant wages and status quo leadership."

2023 Wellness Challenge:
Right On The Money

"The CSU is partnering with Kaiser Permanente to offer employees a four-week financial education program called, "Right On The Money."

Presented as a game to be played on a desktop or mobile device, the challenge allows participants to choose topics most relevant to their life stage and financial interests.

"You’ll be surprised how much you learn - and the confidence you gain - just by playing a game," according to the informational brochure. 

The "Right On The Money" challenge begins Feb. 6 and runs through March 5. Registration, and the option to join a team, closes on Feb. 10.

CSUEU President Catherine Hutchinson has been selected to serve on the Service Employees International Union's (SEIU) Board of Auditors. CSUEU is an affiliating Local of SEIU, a union of 2 million members committed to building a better and more just economy for all.

Consisting of eight members, the Board is charged with examining the books and accounts of the International Secretary-Treasurer. Board members will receive from auditors a report in May.

The report is then presented to the SEIU International Executive Board when it meets later this year. Congratulations, Catherine!

A movement that started 30 years ago is finally seeing results. Staff, faculty and students at CSU San Marcos never ceased advocating for the removal of an anti-immigrant's name attached to a prominent building on campus.

The name change is so important for our DEI, Latinx, migrant and undocumented communities, said Vanessa Vincent, San Marcos Chapter President and Chair of CSUEU Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
